Cellular automata for polymer simulation with application to polymer melts and polymer collapse including implications for protein folding

http://www.sciencedirect.com
Year of publication:
2001
Journal name:
Parallel Computing
Cellular automata can be designed that allow the simulation of a large variety of polymer problems including isolated polymers in dilute solution, polymers in high density melts and polymers embedded in media. The two-space algorithm is a particularly efficient algorithm for polymer simulation that is easy to implement and generalize on both conventional serial hardward and Cellular Automaton (CA) Machines. We describe the implementation of this algorithm and two applications: two dimensions (2-D) melts and polymer collapse. Read more »

Mechanotransduction in gravisensing cells

http://www.sciencedirect.com
Year of publication:
2003
Journal name:
TRENDS in Plant Science
Plant organs can re-orientate themselves with respect to gravity. Gravisensing cells (statocytes) contain movable amyloplasts whose potential energy is apparently used to activate calcium channels by exerting tension on the actin network and/or pressure on the cytoskeleton elements lining the plasma membrane. The chain of events that follows remains to be further analysed but includes transient pH changes in the cytosol and sustained pH changes in the cell wall. Read more »

Mechanotransduction and strain amplification in osteocyte cell processes

http://www.pnas.org
Year of publication:
2004
Journal name:
PNAS
A paradox in bone tissue is that tissue-level strains due to animal and human locomotion are too small to initiate intracellular chemical responses directly. A model recently was proposed to resolve this paradox, which predicts that the fluid flow through the pericellular matrix in the lacunar-canalicular porosity due to mechanical loading can induce strains in the actin filament bundles of the cytoskeleton that are more than an order of magnitude larger than tissue level strains. Osteoblast mechanoresponses on Ti with different surface topographies

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
Year of publication:
2009
Journal name:
Journal of Dental Research
During implant healing, mechanical force is transmitted to osteogenic cells via implant surfaces with various topographies. This study tested a hypothesis that osteoblasts respond to mechanical stimulation differently on titanium with different surface topographies. Rat bone-marrow-derived osteoblastic cells were cultured on titanium disks with machined or acid-etched surfaces. A loading session consisted of a 3-minute application of a 10- or 20-mum-amplitude vibration. Read more »

Mechanics and regulation of cytokinesis

http://dx.doi.org
Year of publication:
2004
Journal name:
Current Opinion in Cell Biology
Recent advances are revealing quantitative aspects of cytokinesis. Further, genetic analyses and cell imaging are providing insights into the molecular dynamics of cleavage furrow ingression as well as further refining our knowledge of the zones of the mitotic spindle that regulate the contractile properties of the overlying cortex. Ultimately, however, cortical mechanics are the result of signals that emanate from the mitotic spindle. Read more »

Mechanotransduction pathways in bone: calcium fluxes and the role of voltage-operated calcium channels

http://www.springerlink.com
Year of publication:
1998
Journal name:
Mechanical and Biological Engineering and Computing
Changes in strain distribution across the vertebrate skeleton induce modelling and remodelling of bone structure. This relationship, like many in biomedical science, has been recognised since the 1800s, but it is only the recent development of in vivo and in vitro models that is allowing detailed investigation of the cellular mechanisms involved. A number of secondary messenger pathways have been implicated in load transduction by bone cells, and many of these pathways are similar to those proposed for other load-responsive cell types. Mechanotransduction in bone: osteoblasts are more responsive to fluid forces than mechanical strain

http://ajpcell.physiology.org
Year of publication:
1997
Journal name:
Cell Physiology
Mechanical force applied to bone produces two localized mechanical signals on the cell: deformation of the extracellular matrix (substrate strain) and extracellular fluid flow. To study the effects of these stimuli on osteoblasts, MC3T3-E1 cells were grown on type I collagen-coated plastic plates and subjected to four-point bending. This technique produces uniform levels of physiological strain and fluid forces on the cells. Each of these parameters can be varied independently. Osteopontin (OPN) mRNA expression was used to assess the anabolic response of MC3T3-E1 cells. Read more »

Finite element methods for Navier-Stokes equations: Theory and algorithms

http://adsabs.harvard.edu
Year of publication:
1986
Journal name:
Springer Series in Computational Mathematics
The mathematical basis of FEMs for incompressible steady interior flow problems is examined in a text (a revised and expanded version of the work of Girault and Raviart, 1979) intended for a postgraduate course in numerical analysis. Chapters are devoted to the mathematical foundation of the Stokes problem, results obtained with a standard FEM approximation, the numerical solution of the Stokes problem in primitive variables, incompressible mixed FEMs for solving the Stokes problem, and the theory and approximation of the Navier-Stokes problem.
